One of my main goals on this site is to help people finds ways to get the content they want, in the way they want it, for a price they can afford. Cable companies haven’t been providing that so I decided to name this site Get Rid Of Cable. It wasn’t however a crusade against cable companies, there was always somewhat of a hope that they would learn from the evolution of the marketplace that the business model they were so beholden to would no longer be tolerated and they would change their methodology in order to provide people with what they want. Unfortunately Comcast (and probably other major ISP’s) seem to be taking the exact opposite approach.
There is no doubt in my mind that capping usage, or charging for bandwidth is designed to “encourage” people to get away from streaming media services and instead remain a slave to their outdated content delivery model. Charging for usage is a a giant leap backwards for consumer internet. Those of us with a few years under our belt remember when ISP’s would charge by the hour for internet use. I remember having $300 America Online bills from spending the same amount of time on the internet I do today. America Online found that this wasn’t working for them so they changed to a flat monthly fee, most other ISP’s followed suit and it has worked that way ever since.
Comcast, rather than listen to its customers want and altering their cable business model are instead trying to drag internet usage back to the 1990’s. They can’t be allowed to do that. In a democratic, capitalist society the power we have is that of where we spend our capital. This is how we need to continue telling Comcast and other companies that they are not giving us what we want and if they want our business they had better listen to our demands or eventually someone else will. If you really want to have cable use a provider other than Comcast. Better yet find alternatives to cable TV, cut the cord and get rid of cable, tell the industry as a whole that we will not settle and they won’t get our hard earned dollars until they give us what we want!
